Circa 1944

This card was issued to Coast Guard personnel completing the physical training course run by boxer Jack Dempsey at the United States Coast Guard Training Station at Manhattan Beach, New York, during World War II. Seven reminders for fighting and fitness are printed on verso. JACK DEMPSEY (1895-1983), "the Manassa Mauler," was world boxing heavyweight champion from 1921 to 1926. He successfully defended his title six times and produced the sport's first million-dollar gate (1921), before he lost a 10-round decision to Gene Tunney in 1926 and retired from the ring. During World War II, he was Director of Physical Education for the Coast Guard, rising to the rank of commander. He taught unarmed fighting to Coast Guard sailors, and edited a training manual, How to Fight Tough (1942).
